It is a heavy premise carried lightly. JOHKES has always cut his emotional rap with dark humour, and the new record keeps that balance — hospital-bed grief on one track, the absurdity of ICU life played for laughs on the next. Even his logo makes the point: the “O” in JOHKES is a wheelchair, dunking a basketball.

The accident, and the voice he rebuilt
JOHKES had been writing since he was nine — a Leicester kid with a story-driven pen and, eventually, BBC local radio airplay to show for it. Then, in 2023, a serious road traffic accident left him in a coma, and he woke tetraplegic, with his breathing and vocal control affected. For a rapper, that last detail is the career-ending one: the instrument itself.
He rebuilt it. As he tells it in his Spotify bio, speech therapy and music therapy during rehabilitation in Sheffield helped him recover his delivery, and he kept writing the whole way through — finishing his album Bridge To Youth during recovery and following it with two more full-length projects in 2025. Peace I Can’t Wake To is the first album to take the accident itself as its subject: not a comeback record about beating the odds, but a concept album about what it costs to wake up.
Fourteen tracks from the wrong side of waking up
The sequencing tells the story on its own. The record opens inside the injury — “All In My Head”, “Alone And Scared” — and closes with the title track, with forgiveness (“I Forgive You”) and reaching for others (“Take My Hand”) along the way. In between, JOHKES has described some of the anchors: “Karma In The Coma” sits with the belief that the coma might have been a kind of karma; “I’m Still Your Brother” is about family, guilt and hospital memories; “I Forgive You” takes on friendship, the crash and the choice to forgive; and “What A Day!” mines the sheer absurdity of ICU life for its dark comedy.
That humour is audible even in the track titles — “My Squirrel My Koala Bear”, “Paid To Put Up With Me” — and it is the thing that keeps a record about grief and tetraplegia from becoming a eulogy. JOHKES treats the jokes and the grief as the same material, which is roughly how hospitals actually feel.

The reference points — Eminem, NF, Juice WRLD, Post Malone — place him in the confessional, melody-forward end of rap. But the closest kin might be Ren, the Welsh artist who turned chronic illness into some of the most-watched UK hip-hop of the decade and proved there is a large audience for songwriting that treats survival as subject matter rather than backstory.
