Logan Byam-Taylor: Storytelling with a purpose

Please introduce yourself. What do you do? Why? What do you want people to know about you?

Hi! I’m an actor, writer and comedian. I want to tell and be apart of stories that give marginalized people authenticity. My parents are lesbians and growing up I had very little representation for what my world looked like. Representation matters: it helps marginalized people feel seen and shows us that even in our differences we are more alike than we think. I want to be apart of that facilitation in whatever way I can.

What qualities make you different and unique from everyone else in the industry?

I grew up with lesbian parents. My parents had my brother and I via a sperm donor. I spent my childhood defending my place in the world as well as my parents. I never wanted to be in the entertainment industry as a kid, I had no energy to think about anything other than surviving my day to day. I was able to get out of my hometown and go to college where I fell in love with rugby. I followed my love of rugby to the UK and played/lived there for a year. When I returned I had no plan, I took a stand up class and started telling stories from my childhood. I remember after one of my shows someone came up to me and said they loved my set, that my moms reminded them of their dad. I knew then the importance of sharing my experience and being authentic. Stories are important in showing us experiences we might never know. They help us grow.

Describe THAT moment when you realized you’re doing what you were born to do.

After one of my stand up shows someone came up to me and said they loved my set, that my moms reminded them of their dad. I knew then the importance of sharing my experience and being authentic. Stories are important in showing us experiences we might never know. They help us grow.

What’s been the biggest challenge you’ve had to go through and how did you grow through it?

My childhood was my biggest challenge, I spent it defending my place in the world as well as my families. If I’m being honest it took me 20 years to grow through it. Only recently during quarantine did I truly have clarity about it. I now see the beauty of my childhood and what it gave me. The woman I am today is because of my mothers, and I am eternally grateful they decided to have me and beyond proud of the grace they showed throughout my childhood with bigotry and hate being thrown in their faces.

Who are the TOP 3 people you’d want to meet that could elevate your career or business?  Why these specific individuals?

Phoebe Waller-Bridge, she tells empowering stories about women for women.
Michaela Coel, a beautiful storyteller who has told stories I deeply resonate with.
Ellen, I know she’s massive but when she came out she did so much for my family. She started conversations in a time where there wasn’t any. I would just want to thank her.
