Austin Sher Aims To Highlight Blossoming Indie Artists And Bands

Please introduce yourself, what you do, why you do it, and what you want people to know about you.

Hello! My name is Austin Sher and I am the founder of We Write About Music. After working in different parts of the entertainment industry and always having a passion for music, I freelanced at different Los Angeles-based publications covering concerts/festivals/anything live music related.

After years of working for someone else, I decided it was time to take my knowledge and start something for myself. Fast forward 3 years and I’ve successfully started my own business that aims to highlight blossoming independent artists and bands all around the globe.

I’ve interviewed some of my favorite bands in the process and attended music festivals all over the world in hopes to discover emerging artists. It’s been a passion turned career and I’ve been super happy with the results.

What qualities make you different and unique from everyone else in the industry?

I think the main difference between myself/this blog is that it actually puts an emphasis on those artists that are undervalued and overlooked in the music making process.

So much of the music industry these days has turned into industry plants, however my aim is to keep an eye on those that are extremely underutilized and need all the press they can get.

Describe THAT moment when you realized you wanted to do what you do now. Who did you tell first? What has it been like since that moment?

There were plenty of those moments, but things turned serious in January of 2020 when the website ramped up quickly. Surprisingly, things got even more serious at the start of the pandemic in March 2020 when the entire industry shut down and artists across the world turned online to help promote themselves. Since then, it’s been continuing to get the word out about the website and helping artists everywhere.

What has been the biggest challenge you’ve had to face and how did you overcome it?

The biggest struggle, thankfully, has been being too busy with so many artists that need coverage. Due to social media, our name gets spread around quite a bit for those looking to promote their music, however we can only cover so many musicians per day.

If you had to pick the TOP 3 people you’d want to meet that could take your career (or business) to the next level…who would those 3 people be?

That’s a tough one!

1. Kevin Parker from Tame Impala
2. Thom Yorke from Radiohead
3. Father John Misty
