From Fake Friends to Find Yourself: Meera’s Journey Through Music

Please introduce yourself. What do you do? Why? What do you want people to know about you?

My name is Meera and I’m a producer/singer based in London. Loneliness was a big theme in my childhood and growing up I dealt with more fake friends than I would have liked. Music can speak a thousand words and be there when no one else is, which is why I want to have a career in music!

I have just released my new song ‘Move On’ and my next single is due for release October 21st!

What qualities make you different and unique from everyone else in the industry?

If I asked you about your favourite pop album growing up, I can guarantee that album focuses on heartbreak or falling in/out of love right? There is nothing wrong with artists writing about love, but it’s not the only thing that happens in our lives.

I want to write songs about fake friends, finding yourself/feeling lost, financial worries, lost dreams and various other topics that are sometimes overlooked in the mainstream pop market. Growing up I struggled to make friends and It was difficult to come across music that addressed fake friend and the challenges we face growing up outside of being in/out of love.

Describe THAT moment when you realized you’re doing what you were born to do.

2007 the year my parents got divorced. Without making this some sad sob story, my childhood was not exactly fun. My sister became distant after my parents divorce, my mum was crying almost everyday and as a 7 year old I had no idea what to say to make it better. It all became a bit overwhelming for little me, until I started writing my thoughts into a diary. That diary soon became my lyrics book and those lyrics led to my first original songs. It was a way to escape when life got a bit too much.

I played my first original song to my mum on my tiny keyboard and it was the first time I heard her laugh. Not sure if she was laughing because it was exactly how you would expect a 7 year old to sing, or because she thought the lyrics were overdramtic. I realised in that moment, that this is what I want to do with the rest of my life. Make music that makes others feels better and let them escape for a few minutes.

What’s been the biggest challenge you’ve had to go through and how did you grow through it?

2009-2012 was a difficult time emotionally and physically. I dealt with a lot of bullying based on the way I looked. Listening to music like Katy Perry ‘Part of Me’ and Taylor swift ‘Mean’ helped me grow through it.

I always thought Taylor looked prefect, so the idea she ever had to deal with any form of bullying gave some kind of comfort. Listening to music was like talking to the friends I wish I had as a kid , very cheesy but true, and that helped me power through it.

Who are the TOP 3 people you’d want to meet that could elevate your career or business?  Why these specific individuals?

Max Martin – one of my favourite pop producers and made some of my favourite songs from Britney to Katy Perry.
Taylor Swift – One of the best story tellers in the industry in my opinion.
