Please introduce yourself. What do you do? Why? What do you want people to know about you?
My name is JB SamSon and I’m a musician and clothing designer! I’ve always had a great life and appreciation for music. I’ve been making music for years now, but I’ve been making music professionally for about 4 years now! I initially started creating music just because i loved the way music makes me feel and how it connects people so well, regardless of their differences. As i got older it basically became a form of therapy for me, as well as a way to let other people who may feel or have felt the way I’ve felt know that they’re not alone in life’s struggles.
I also started my BttrFly Effect Apparel brand last year! The main objective is to create clothing pieces that, not only go along with my music as simple “merch”, but to create pieces and accessories that remind people to know, love, and BE themselves! I’m beyond excited to see where things go with my brand as time goes on!
What qualities make you different and unique from everyone else in the industry?
I’d say one quality that makes me different from other artists is the way i approach my music altogether. I do my best not to force anything, but i also make sure that everything i do is done with purpose. Every lyric, every note, every instrument choice. They all are chosen on purpose and with intention (but of course i still like to leave room for the occasional happy accident or act of God )!
I also think the fact that i do all my own writing, production, mixing and mastering sets me apart as well. If there’s anything i know for a fact (and that I’ve been told several times over by many people), it’s that my music sounds a lot different from what you’re used to hearing from most artists, and I’m very much ok with that!
Describe THAT moment when you realized you’re doing what you were born to do.
I think the moment i realized that i was meant to make music was the first time i heard my voice on a track. I was just starting to (sort of) figure out production, and i was working on recording a cover of one of my favorite songs at the time in GarageBand on my iPhone. I recorded the guitar part, built the beat, recorded my vocal parts, did a lil mixing, and then i sat back and listened. What i heard made me VERY happy! I loved hearing my voice alongside the music and the process of putting the track together was sooo much fun!
So, i just kept doing it!
What’s been the biggest challenge you’ve had to go through and how did you grow through it?
Honestly, the biggest challenge I’ve had to go through has been believing in myself. I spent pretty much my entire life up until a few years ago constantly hearing how unrealistic my goal of being an artist was. Family and “friends” telling me how I’d “never make it”, how my dream was a long shot, how i wasn’t good enough. After a while you start to believe the lie, ya know? It wasn’t until i realized that regardless of who believed in me or how “big” i got with my music i was still gonna create it, so i might as well put some real effort into it. Once i realized that, i found myself being even more invested and even more in love with my creative process, which in turn caused me to believe in myself more than i ever had! These days, a lot of those people that didn’t believe in me don’t know what to say. But what’s beautiful is, now i don’t need them to say anything (Cue peaceful smile).
Who are the TOP 3 people you’d want to meet that could elevate your career or business? Why these specific individuals?
Three people I’d love to meet would be Kendrick Lamar, Donald Glover(aka Childish Gambino), and Anderson .Paak! These are just 3 of the people that have inspired and impacted my musical journey and who i feel i could relate to in a lot of ways. From their creative personas, to who they are as just every day men, i feel like there’s a lot i could learn from them. Plus i just feel like we’d have a good time together!
