What qualities make you different and unique from everyone else in the industry?
I’m trying to raise up young people through my music. I’ve started speaking and performing in schools, and I’m obsessed with doing it! I talk to kids about standing up for themselves after my song Stand Up and it’s so special! This is was music is FOR
Describe THAT moment when you realized you’re doing what you were born to do.
Oh man. I was trying to be a singer for so long. I tried on opera, then musical theater. I constantly felt stuck, gave a ton of producers my hard earned money and wasted it on bad songs that I wrote before I knew what I was doing. THEN I started getting educated in songwriting, instead of letting other people drive that bus. I found myself as a songwriter, and then the path opened up, illuminated, became clear, and had bunnies and unicorns leading the way for me. But really, scholarships to writing retreats and conference materialized, and it really became clear and easier once I alighted on the right path for me. Finding myself as a songwriter helped me realize that I had stories that only I could share, and it helped me finally discover myself as a singer.
What’s been the biggest challenge you’ve had to go through and how did you grow through it?
My confidence was non existent as a human and as a singer, and that caused me to hit a lot of dead ends and smash into walls before I’d admit they were walls. I didn’t believe in myself, so when someone else told me the “only way” I could become a singer was by listening to them, following their path, giving them cash under the table, I was so desperate to live the life I dreamed, that I listened. Once I decided that only I could make my own career a success, and I began studying songwriting and marketing, things finally turned around for me after truly years of frustration and struggle.
Who are the TOP 3 people you’d want to meet that could elevate your career or business? Why these specific individuals?
Dan Wilson. I would absolutely love to write with him and learn from him as a songwriter. He makes the most beautiful music and it comes straight from the heart, but it still universal and relatable
Pharell, because I love everything he creates and think he’s genius
Ed Sheeran, because I love his versatility as a songwriter and he’s a genius.
