A little over 12 months ago, I began filming easy-to-digest content on TikTok including healthier recipe options that are simple to make for anyone intimidated by cooking, and a collection of workouts that can be done at home with little to no equipment during the pandemic.
The content was meant to be for people who felt stuck at home during such a crazy time. I wanted people to realize that we can be healthy and active any time and anywhere, no matter the circumstances.
I now have a following of over 730,000. I brought that positive mentality over to Instagram about 6 months later and have grown my following there to 280,000. That’s when I quit my 9-5 and began this full-time. I’m a second-generation Canadian (Born and raised in Toronto)
What qualities make you different and unique from everyone else in the industry?
I’m proud of being one of the few brown influencers in the health and fitness space. You don’t see people of my color on fitness ads, billboards, commercials, etc.
I saw an opportunity to change that. Also, when people come to my page, I want them to be able to come to a positive environment. It’s a place where they know they will always get the real me in full transparency. I block out times of my day to respond to every single message and comment.
I know it’s hard as I continue to grow, but making time for everyone will always be my way of showing appreciation for the love I receive.
When I started, I worked out a very specific structure to my videos on TikTok and treated my page like a weekly TV episode, posting a recipe every 4-5 days. My audience knew exactly what they’re going to get.
It’s also so awesome to see that the shirtless intro and “signature finger point” seemed to also catch on with other people for their own success.
Lots of simple, healthier, macro-friendly recipe pages these days now.
Describe THAT moment when you realized you wanted to do what you do now. Who did you tell first? What has it been like since that moment?
It’s when I received a message from a supporter from India.
They told me that there weren’t many South Asians that have a natural physique like mine to look up to in the fitness industry.
Gradually, I began hearing this more and more. I told my girlfriend, parents, and brother. They were all extremely supportive and told me to take the leap.
Since then, it’s been a blessing and I’m so grateful to be able to do what I love full-time.
What has been the biggest challenge you’ve had to face and how did you overcome it?
I moved on from being a Director of Digital Content for a social media agency for over 3 years, spearheading video content for brands like Domino’s Pizza and Xbox.
The biggest challenge was making that leap into a new beginning.
I struggled with it for some time. I even tried juggling the two, but it was simply too much.
However, once I realized I had support from everyone around me and I truly believed in myself, I left.
The CEO who is a good friend of mine was completely supportive of the decision too.
If you had to pick the TOP 3 people you’d want to meet that could take your career (or business) to the next level…who would those 3 people be?
People I’d love to learn from including Jamie Oliver, Gary Vaynerchuk, and Gordon Ramsay.
