Terence Sampson: Embracing Diversity and Audacity in Psychotherapy

Please introduce yourself. What do you do? Why? What do you want people to know about you?

My name is Terence Sampson. I am a licensed psychotherapist. I was a very precocious and emotionally intelligent as child. I constantly found myself having conversations with adults.

There was something about communicating and listening to people that I found very interesting. What was even more interesting was watching how some of my words would positively affect people.

What qualities make you different and unique from everyone else in the industry?

I want people to know that I am a whole person with many different sides. And I think it’s best and healthy to act on all of them. It may sound crazy, but I’m not just a therapist. Tomorrow I may want to be a pornstar, and the next day a politician.

That’s the beauty of life: change. No one wants to be the same every day. A repetitive state is kinda boring. People are so scared to do big things. It may look crazy at the time, but it’s the truth.”

Things that set me apart from other clinicians is that I am not afraid to show the human side of myself. I’m not afraid to show my insecurities, vulnerabilities, and my audacious personality, especially in terms of my sexuality.

Describe THAT moment when you realized you’re doing what you were born to do.

In graduate school, I was interning at Morehouse College, an all-male historically black college. I worked with young men who experienced mental health challenges, from depression to schizophrenia to borderline personality disorders. Being able to support them and witness the effectiveness of my treatment warmed my heart. This is what I was born to do!

What’s been the biggest challenge you’ve had to go through and how did you grow through it?

I would say the biggest challenge was presenting myself as an emotionally intelligent therapist while suffering emotionally themselves. I grew from it because I learned that sometimes you have to think bigger than how you feel. Some days you may not want to show up for your kids, family, patients. But you still show up and give the best you got.

Who are the TOP 3 people you’d want to meet that could elevate your career or business?  Why these specific individuals?

Sista Soldier, who a huge inspiration for a lot of my writing. Also Chris brown, because his influence on music and culture impacts my work as a clinician and a writer. And although he is no longer with us I would have loved to meet Johnny Cochran.

As an attorney he had a theatrical and unusual edge to him that set him apart from others in his field. He was an attorney, but sometimes it felt like you were watching a movie. In the same way that I’m a therapist with a racy, entertaining, and provocative image.
