Transformative Power Of Film | Meitar Paz

Please introduce yourself. What do you do? Why? What do you want people to know about you?

Hi, my name is Meitar Paz.
I’m an Actress, Writer and Director,
a passionate storyteller and a hard working dreamer, who likes to set goals and accomplish them.
As a filmmaker, I hope to take the audience on a meaningful, insightful and dynamic journey,
and use my scripts and films to create a positive change, and inspire others to fight for a better future:)

What qualities make you different and unique from everyone else in the industry?

Since a very young age I looked at the world differently. My eyes were my private creative lenses, and I was bewitched by the endless possibilities to create and tell stories.
I remember turning the numbers in my math notebook into characters and creatures I doodled happily, and playing the perfect song in my head while watching various human interactions- viewing them as possible movie scenes.
I was always craving opportunities to create. The stage and the camera became my happy place, and my passion for performing really taught me how much of a “Need” it is for me and not just a “Want”.
I think my determination to follow my dream regardless of any obstacles that might occur , really set me apart from others. I have proved myself time and time again, that it’s only impossible until it’s done.
I moved to LA from Israel without knowing anyone here , adjusting to another language and culture, far away from family and loved ones and the list goes on, but my fire and passion for acting and creating always kept me going and kept a smile on my face.
While this journey can be quite a roller coaster sometimes, I make sure to always stay true to myself and my values, remember where I came from and where I started , stay humble, appreciate every little step I took that either brought me closer to my goal or taught me a lesson, and be grateful for all the wonderful opportunities and experiences I’ve encountered.

Describe THAT moment when you realized you’re doing what you were born to do.

When I was 8 years old my parents got divorced. From a very happy, outgoing kid I kinda shut down for a little while . I became more closed off and careful.
Felt like for a few years I lost my “spark” .
I was always very creative, and I knew performing always made me very happy, so, when my mom found a newspaper ad for a youth theater group in the Haifa theatre back in my home country , I decided to give it a shot, and… wow. It affected me in ways I cannot explain. I felt like I truly found my passion, and more than that, I found myself again 🙂
I remember the first time I stood on the theatre stage. It was such a magical , warm feeling.
I truly felt at home. I met some amazing people in this theatre group and we became one theatre family . I grew so much as an actress and as a person. And I gained my “spark” back 🙂 I became much more confident and outgoing . after acting in this group for 4 years , I knew that acting is going to be an inseparable part of my life.

What’s been the biggest challenge you’ve had to go through and how did you grow through it?

One of my biggest challenges in my career happened when I was still living and acting in Israel.
After many days of auditions, hard work and dedication, I received a very happy message, saying I booked a guest star role in a famous Israeli TV series. I was extremely happy.
A few days later I received a less fortunate “surprise “.
I was hospitalized due to an acute appendicitis, that bursted, and had to undergo an urgent surgery. The healing process took longer than expected.
I felt sad, frustrated and helpless, I was in so much pain and even a slight movement seemed like a challenge.
The shoot day was approaching but I was still hospitalised. Even though I could barely walk, giving up was definitely not an option! I was determined to be on that show. As they say in Hollywood, “The show must go on …”
It was 5 am and I was on my way to set with titanium clips attached to my body, but with a big dream within me.

Who are the TOP 3 people you’d want to meet that could elevate your career or business?  Why these specific individuals?

I must admit, I had a hard time choosing only 3 people, since there are so many talented artists and knowledgeable industry professionals that I would have loved to meet, but if I have to choose, I’d say:
1) Sarah Finn, the Emmy award winning casting director of Marvel’s cinematic universe. I played the role of Captain marvel in a web series for a few years, and in comic cons across America, and I fell in love with the character and her backstory . I definitely think that our society needs more empowering female characters, and I hope to join the Marvel family one day .
2) Steven Spielberg. I admire Spielberg’s work and his continuous passion for filmmaking since a very young age. His dedication, combined with his tremendous talent made him a fabulous director and filmmaker. I love his creative style and unique approach. And I’m sure we would have shared a fascinating, deep conversation.
3) My third choice is Damien Chazelle,
French-American director, screenwriter and producer, who is known for the wonderful films: “Whiplash” and “La la land”.
As an actress who also loved singing, and music is an inseparable part of my life, I think Damien Chazelle does a really great job in understanding and showcasing the hard working dreamers characters in his films.
He doesn’t show a glamorized story of success , but something more real and intimate, that connects dreams with reality.
In his films he often deals with the same questions I am dealing with in my own life – how do you balance art and life / dreams and reality. Choices that you make for your art and how do they affect your life choices etc .
I like his visuals and think his work is creative ,unique, and puts a lot of emphasis on music – which I find so important .
