The special nobody wanted

In spring 2020, with comedy clubs shut down across the country, Mark Normand had a finished hour of stand-up and nowhere to put it. Streaming services and networks passed. So on May 12, 2020, he uploaded Out to Lunch to his own YouTube channel and gave it away.

“Nobody would touch me, so I had to put it up for free, and it just blew up,” he told Los Angeles Magazine in 2023.

It did. As of October 2026 the full special has close to 14 million views on YouTube. Three years later, Netflix gave him his first hour on the platform. In March 2026 it released his second.

Who is Mark Normand?

Mark Normand is an American stand-up comedian and podcaster. His style is fast and tight: short setups, hard punchlines, no props and no music. Los Angeles Magazine compared his mix of observation and wordplay to Jerry Seinfeld and George Carlin, and his willingness to make everyone a target to Don Rickles.

He has done more than a dozen late-night sets, mostly on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, along with Conan and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. He has appeared on The Joe Rogan Experience and is a regular panelist on Kill Tony. His official bio quotes Jerry Seinfeld calling him the “best up and coming comic.”

Where is Mark Normand from?

Normand is from New Orleans, Louisiana, and started doing stand-up there in 2006. He has said there wasn’t much stage time in New Orleans back then, so he moved to New York, where he still lives, in the West Village.

He has said his goal at the start was simple. “I just wanted to not have a day job or work in a cubicle,” he told Los Angeles Magazine.

How did Mark Normand get famous?

It took years of club work. In 2013 he was a New Face at the Just for Laughs festival in Montreal, one of the main showcases where the industry scouts new comics. In 2014 he got a half hour on Comedy Central’s The Half Hour and released his first album, Still Got It.

Amy Schumer, whose Comedy Central show Inside Amy Schumer he had acted in, executive-produced his first hour, Don’t Be Yourself, which premiered on Comedy Central on May 12, 2017. A half hour on Netflix’s The Standups followed in December 2021.

The real turn was Out to Lunch. Clips from it circulated widely on social media, and the special introduced him to a much bigger audience than late-night TV ever had. Today he has about 1 million followers on TikTok alone, where his clips have pulled in 27.4 million likes.

What is Mark Normand’s comedy about?

Almost anything. Relationships, language, New York, politics and the business of comedy itself all end up in the act. He leans into touchy subjects, but his rule is that the joke has to be the point.

“I think as long as it’s always a joke, you can talk about anything,” he told Fox News Digital in March 2026. He’s also clear about what he isn’t trying to do: “I don’t want to be saving the world. I don’t want to be an activist.”
