Eminem was born Marshall Bruce Mathers III on October 17, 1972, in St. Joseph, Missouri, and he turns 54 on October 17, 2026. But his birthday is only one of the reasons October belongs to him. His big break, his biggest song, his fastest song and his loudest political moments all landed in the same month.

We went through the record and found 11 October dates that built Slim Shady. Put together, they tell his whole career in one month.

How old is Eminem, and when is his birthday?

Eminem’s birthday is October 17. He was born in 1972 in St. Joseph, Missouri, the only child of Deborah Nelson and Marshall Bruce Mathers Jr., and grew up mostly in and around Detroit. On October 17, 2026, he turns 54.

That makes 2026 an unusual birthday. He is now a grandfather, a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and the subject of the 2025 documentary Stans, and he is still one of the most-streamed rappers in the world.

What are the 11 October dates that built Eminem?

1. October 2, 1973: Proof is born

Before there was Slim Shady, there was Proof. DeShaun “Proof” Holton was born in Detroit on October 2, 1973. He hosted the Saturday battles at the Hip Hop Shop where Eminem sharpened his skills, co-founded D12 with him in 1996 and played Lil’ Tic in 8 Mile. Proof was killed in 2006. He would turn 53 this year. We are publishing a full tribute to him on his birthday.

2. October 3, 2024: “Grandpa”

On October 3, 2024, Eminem released the video for “Temporary,” featuring Skylar Grey. It is built from home videos of his daughter Hailie Jade, from childhood to her wedding day. At the end, Hailie hands him a jersey with “Grandpa” on the back and a sonogram. That is how the world found out Eminem was going to be a grandfather.

3. October 10, 2017: “The Storm”

The 2017 BET Hip Hop Awards were taped on October 6 in Miami Beach and aired on October 10. Eminem’s pre-taped cypher verse, titled “The Storm,” spent more than four minutes attacking President Donald Trump, from his response to Hurricane Maria to the NFL protests. It became one of the most talked-about moments in the show’s history.

4. October 15, 2013: “Rap God”

“Rap God” came out on October 15, 2013, as a single from The Marshall Mathers LP 2. It holds the Guinness World Record for most words in a hit single, with 1,560 words in about six minutes. Its fastest section packs 99 words and 157 syllables into 16.45 seconds, about 6.1 words per second. It peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100.

5. October 17, 1972: Marshall Mathers is born

The anchor of the whole month. Marshall Bruce Mathers III was born in St. Joseph, Missouri, and spent much of his childhood moving between Missouri and Michigan before settling in the Detroit area. The rest of this list only exists because of what he did with that childhood.

6. October 20 and 26, 2004: “Mosh”

Eminem released “Mosh” on October 20, 2004, and the video debuted on October 26, one week before the presidential election. The animated video closes with a call to register and the words “Vote Tuesday, November 2” on screen. It was one of the most direct political statements a major pop star made that year.

7. October 22, 2024: Introducing Obama in Detroit

Twenty years after “Mosh,” Eminem stepped into politics again in October. On October 22, 2024, he introduced former President Barack Obama at a Harris-Walz rally at Huntington Place in Detroit. “The city of Detroit and the whole state of Michigan mean a lot to me,” he told the crowd before urging everyone to vote. Obama walked out to “Lose Yourself” and rapped its opening lines.

8. October 24, 1997: The Rap Olympics

One week after turning 25, broke and recently evicted, Eminem finished second at the Rap Olympics near LAX. An Interscope intern got his tape to Jimmy Iovine, who played it for Dr. Dre, who signed him. We told the full story in The LA Loss That Made Eminem.

9. October 28, 2002: “Lose Yourself”

“Lose Yourself” was released on October 28, 2002, and the 8 Mile soundtrack followed the next day, debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with more than 702,000 copies sold in its first week. Eminem wrote the song during breaks while filming 8 Mile and produced it with Jeff Bass and Luis Resto. It spent 12 straight weeks at No. 1 on the Hot 100, his first US chart-topper, and in 2003 became the first hip-hop song to win the Academy Award for Best Original Song.

10. October 29, 2013: “The Monster”

Exactly 11 years after the 8 Mile soundtrack, Eminem released “The Monster” with Rihanna on October 29, 2013. It was their fourth collaboration, went to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and won the Grammy for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration in 2015.

11. October 30: Devil’s Night

In Detroit, the night before Halloween has a name. Devil’s Night was a local tradition in which abandoned homes were set on fire. When Eminem, Proof and the rest of D12 released their debut album in 2001, they called it Devil’s Night. It debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. In June 2026, D12 marked the album’s 25th anniversary with D12 Forever Vol. 1, which includes unreleased Proof verses.

Why does so much of Eminem’s career happen in October?

Part of it is the calendar. Big albums and soundtracks are often set for the fall, ahead of the holidays, so the singles come out in October. 8 Mile opened in November 2002, and The Marshall Mathers LP 2 arrived in November 2013. Their biggest singles landed a few weeks earlier.

The other part is politics. American elections are held in early November, which puts the final stretch of every campaign in October. When Eminem has chosen to speak out, with “Mosh” in 2004, “The Storm” in 2017 and the Obama rally in 2024, it has been in October. With the 2026 midterm elections set for November 3, fans will be paying attention to whether he says anything this year.

And some of it is just coincidence: a birthday, a best friend’s birthday and a battle in Los Angeles that happened to fall a week apart. Taken together, it is hard to find another artist whose story is this concentrated in one month.

How can fans celebrate Eminem’s birthday this October?

  • Play the October singles in order: “Lose Yourself,” “Mosh,” “Rap God,” “The Monster” and “Temporary.”
  • Rewatch 8 Mile and look for Proof as Lil’ Tic.
  • Stream Stans, the documentary about Eminem’s fans, on Paramount+.
  • Revisit the Rap Olympics story on October 24, the anniversary of the night that got him signed.
