Coltin does it all himself. The Salt Lake City musician writes the songs, plays every instrument, produces the recordings and puts them out on his own. His newest, “Broken Wings,” is out Friday, November 6. He calls it an indie folk and indie pop song, and on his Linktree he is plain about how he feels about it: “My best song yet.”

What is “Broken Wings”?

Coltin says he wrote “Broken Wings” for a radio show he is playing in December, which helps explain why he put the song out stripped down first. Two days before release, he posted a raw live acoustic take, just him and his guitar, with the lyrics appearing one word at a time. The studio version adds the full arrangement, every part of it played by Coltin.

The artwork leans into the one-man-band idea. It shows two Coltins on the same leather couch, one playing an acoustic guitar and one holding a cup of coffee.

Acoustic or studio version of “Broken Wings”?

How busy has Coltin been?

Very. “Broken Wings” is his sixth single since mid-September, about one every week or two:

  • “Little Boat” (September 19)
  • “Mess My Life Up” (September 26)
  • “Time of Our Lives” (October 9)
  • “It’s Time For Me To Leave” (October 16)
  • “Why?” (October 30)
  • “Broken Wings” (November 6)

That kind of pace is how independent artists build a catalog and an audience at the same time, and doing it while handling every instrument and the production is no small thing.
