Please introduce yourself, what you do, why you do it, and what you want people to know about you.
My name is Nimi Adokiye. I am an actress. I got into this industry because there is nothing else that makes me feel fulfilled like acting. I know that being an actress, I am living my ultimate purpose.
I hope my life shows that to others. I want every single person to fall in love with their own destiny. If you have a passion, you can’t restrict it or shove it away. You have to embrace it and go for it. Whatever that may be.
What qualities make you different and unique from everyone else in the industry?
There are so many things that make me, me. I am Nigerian, a child of immigrants. I am married in an interracial relationship. I’m a dog mom (soon to be a boy mom). I’m from Texas. I had a difficult childhood with lots of pain and loss but some love and compassion.
I love to laugh. I’m a hard worker. I’m also a great friend and I really really care about people. All of these things are not in and of themselves unique. But I think it’s the specific mix of unique ingredients that makes me unique.
I am confident in who I am, what I am about, and where I am going so I know that sets me apart from so many others in this industry.
Describe THAT moment when you realized you wanted to do what you do now. Who did you tell first? What has it been like since that moment?
I was in a high school production of Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory playing Grandma Georgina. I got bit by the acting bug. I knew there was nothing else I wanted to do.
I told my friends Ashley and Anahi and they both encouraged me to go after it and fulfill my dreams. Still to this day, they’re cheering for me and rooting me forward.
It hasn’t been easy but I know what’s in front of me. I know I will be successful. Every moment since that day, I have been focused on getting it.
What has been the biggest challenge you’ve had to face and how did you overcome it?
I face a lot of challenges. I lost my father at a young age. I also lost my grandmother, who was my best friend, at a young age.
I’ve experienced homelessness and I was put in situations that have been dangerous, and that tried to compromise who I am and what I hold as the truth.
I think you overcome by taking one day at a time, one step in front of the other. Through prayer and stubbornness, you keep pushing through until one day you realize you’re on the other side and you’ve overcome it.
If you had to pick the TOP 3 people you’d want to meet that could take your career (or business) to the next level…who would those 3 people be?
Viola Davis, Denzel Washington, and Joyce Meyers. Viola – to learn as much of her traits as possible.
There is no other actor in the world that can move an audience so purely and deeply as she can. Denzel is someone I really respect because of his level of integrity and honor. He takes extreme pride in every role he plays. He’s on top for a reason.
Joyce Meyer is such an incredible encouragement to me. Even if she’s not in the entertainment industry, I think that I could learn a lot from her.
