Director Michael Duff Is Poised To Take On Hollywood And Bring More Creativity To His Films
Please introduce yourself, what you do, why you do it, and what you want people to know about you.
Hello, I’m Michael Duff, a director, writer and photographer. I’m a late bloomer in the directing world, but have always been a film fanatic. For the past few years, I have written and directed short films around the Philadelphia area.
What qualities make you different and unique from everyone else in the industry?
What qualities make me different is the wisdom and experience of age and life. I work in a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, and I see kids die all the time.
Film is an amazing alchemy of the arts and a great outlet for me. I go to work and it’s a cold, stark reality. I write and create, and it’s pure joy.
Describe THAT moment when you realized you wanted to do what you do now. Who did you tell first? What has it been like since that moment?
The moment occurred about 20 years ago when I read the book, “How to Think Like Leonardo Da’Vinci (Michael Gelb), and I realized the only thing holding me back was fear.
For so long, I was too scared to peruse my passion for film. But, life is too short not to try. I have seen how life can be stripped from you at any moment, and sometimes way too soon. I was not going to live my life without at least giving my dreams a shot.
What has been the biggest challenge you’ve had to face and how did you overcome it?
My biggest challenge is realizing that no one has more passion invested in a project than the one creating it, and relying on other people can be challenging in realizing my vision. Finding your crew, your team, has been very beneficial to me in creating my films. With trust, you can create some wonderful things.
If you had to pick the TOP 3 people you’d want to meet that could take your career (or business) to the next level…who would those 3 people be?
M. Night Shyamalan, Hitchcock, and Scorsese.
