How Actress Thelma Sugay Decided To Go Back To Her Love For Acting

Please introduce yourself. What do you do? Why? What do you want people to know about you?!

I am fearless and adventurous. I believe this is the reason I have been blessed to be in projects I would otherwise have missed out on. Most of the opportunities that have come my way have been through my wide network of friends and business associates.

This year, however, I resolve to be more intentional. No more getting roles through mere fortunate accidental meetings.

My life slogan for 2022 shall be this: “Be Intentional”

What qualities make you different and unique from everyone else in the industry?

Why me? Because my life experiences have developed in me naturally processed depths in character.

I am able to bring out the truth and genuineness in my acting so that I remain to be relatable on screen. People can connect with the character I portray with great ease.

Describe THAT moment when you realized you’re doing what you were born to do.

It was the year 2008. I had auditioned and booked for the wife role in the student film “Nagpapanggap”. I was going through some challenges in my personal life and the role almost mirrored my life then.

In the film, I had a philandering husband. Needless to say, the film garnered numerous awards in various film festivals. The highlight was the special screening at the Disney Hall Theater in DTLA.

My father, daughter, older sister, and brother were in the audience. They all validated that I indeed had the natural ability to act. What a joy it was to share that evening with my family.

What’s been the biggest challenge you’ve had to go through and how did you grow through it?

The biggest challenge then was that inclusion and diversity were a rarity. Now, there’s no reason not to land a plum role.

The compensation for this craft was almost comical. I then had to dabble into other areas such as writing and event planning to be able to raise my 2 kids.

Now that they’re both adults and self-sufficient, I have decided to go back to my first love – acting.

Who are the TOP 3 people you’d want to meet that could elevate your career or business? Why these specific individuals?

  • Joan Didiom – but she has since passed away so don’t see that happening
  • Lin Manuel
  • Steven Spielberg
  • Tom Hanks and/or creator of Parasite
