International Makeup Artist, Maddie Chamberland, Left Her 9-5 To Pursue Her Dreams at only 18-Years-Old
Please introduce yourself, what you do, why you do it, and what you want people to know about you.
My name is Maddie, I’m a certified International Makeup artist. I’ve been glamming people since 2015 as a freelancer and I’ve never stopped, and never will! I do this job because being a part of the fashion industry is the most invigorating job I’ve ever had. The hustle and bustle of the fashion world are addicting and being able to be a part of it means the world to be as a growing artist.
I’ve done a handful of celebrities and big influencers, but my goal is to work in film or runway as a Key Artist. I do this to make women, men, and everyone alike to feel beautiful and like the best version of themselves. The transformation to tell a story through makeup and hair is the reason I do this.
It’s not only my job, but it’s my passion and I consider, my purpose. Being a makeup artist is my outlet to express my creative thoughts, feelings, and my own story through human canvases.
What qualities make you different and unique from everyone else in the industry?
I think every artist has unique qualities, that’s what it means to be an artist, to express your uniqueness. My uniqueness, I believe, is my ability to deliver anything I think of into a look, or understand any concept and execute it.
I take pride in being able to deliver superb work that I’m confident in and confident the client will love. I have the ability to create concepts and put them onto a human canvas as art brought to life.
Describe THAT moment when you realized you wanted to do what you do now. Who did you tell first? What has it been like since that moment?
The moment I knew this is what I was meant to do was in 2018. It was my first semester in college, I was a psychology major, and I knew being in an office, or a 9-5, was not for me. I was born to create. I have been an artist for as long as I can remember, whether it was paint, pencil and paper, makeup, anything to express my creativity, art was who I am.
So I decided quickly to leave university, and tell my family I’m pursuing my dream, indefinitely. They were worried, of course. It’s a hard dream, to drop the stability and be an artist. Especially where I come from.
But since that day, my passion and drive have only grown with my hunger to become a top makeup artist. It’s been an uphill climb but it’s been one of the most fulfilling journeys of my life thus far.
What has been the biggest challenge you’ve had to face and how did you overcome it?
The biggest challenge I’ve had to overcome is being a business owner at 18 years old. Everyone doubts you, everyone says you will fail. But you have to keep going. I worked hours day in and day out on my skill to prove I can do it. I studied small business ethics for hours a day.
I put my name out everywhere I could and I took every job that I could to push my name out there. It was the hardest struggle of my life pushing through the wall of doubt people around you push on you. But you can never give up on a dream, it’s the driving force of lives.
If you had to pick the TOP 3 people you’d want to meet that could take your career (or business) to the next level…who would those 3 people be?
I would want to meet MakeupbyMario, @nikki_makeup, and Nikkie Tutorials.
These people are my inspirations for doing what I do. Mario for his amazing techniques and his ability to educate, Nikki Makeup for her insane talent and ability to create any type of look on any canvas, and Nikkie Tutorials for her courage and her love for this industry no matter what.
These people inspire me every day to persevere.
