Please introduce yourself, what you do, why you do it, and what you want people to know about you.
Hey, I’m CJ! I am a musical artist out of Denver, Colorado, fuzing together elements of Rock & Roll and Hip Hop.
I record and perform as my solo alias, Recet. I make music for old-fashioned souls who look for a modern bite.
Through my musical career, I am striving to inspire instrumentalists, vocalists, and producers alike to push past the traditional constructs of their instruments. I also strive to help drive the music industry towards an even more collaborative/loyal way of creating + sharing music.
One thing to know about me is that I am a multi-instrumentalist; I’ve been in many shoes musically, and I hope to bring all the musical perspectives I know of together in a wholesome/encompassing way.
What qualities make you different and unique from everyone else in the industry?
There are a couple of things that make me especially different from many artists in the music industry.
Firstly, I am willing to show all my colors as an artist; the ugly & beautiful, the joyous & distraught, the light & the dark, etc., etc., etc.
I’ve found vulnerability is a big strength of mine, and even though many things in this world are conventionally recognized as “good” or “bad”, I believe there is a quality of coping within sharing all types of feelings. Music can be a powerful healer, and I hope to help those in places that I’ve been before by showing that they’re not alone, and that resolution is infinite.
Number two: I am bringing an aspect of musical performance the world has never seen before. Sure, you’ve got to have a uniquely honed sound in order to make a mark at the top. But what is it about an artist that makes them an influencer of influencers? It’s someone who literally shifts the way the industry functions; how artists and producers interact, how shows are planned, how concerts are performed. Right now, I am manifesting that shift. I envision an industry where bands are back to being bands, where instrumentalists are employable for so many more applications compared to today, all in a way where solo artists and producers still are well-in the picture. As an instrumentalist too, I’m looking to bring the ones who inspire me up along my journey, and I furthermore want to empower musicians to know that they can do the same.
Describe THAT moment when you realized you wanted to do what you do now. Who did you tell first? What has it been like since that moment?
I was 10 years old when I held my first pair of drum sticks. Music has always been and always will be what I do. I told my parents first, and I am incredibly fortunate to have their support from the very beginning. Since then, it’s been a forever-term relationship. There are ups and downs, as all things have, but I always find the resolution and love for it time and time again.
What has been the biggest challenge you’ve had to face and how did you overcome it?
The biggest challenge I’ve faced so far has been stepping out from behind the drum set to be the frontman. I’m experiencing that still! It’s such a different animal, and I really love it.
If you had to pick the TOP 3 people you’d want to meet that could take your career (or business) to the next level…who would those 3 people be?
I’ve got a whole list of people who I want to collaborate + work with, so this might be a tricky answer to choose for me 😂😅 I would really love to meet + collaborate with Rick Rubin, Grant Cardone, and Jojo Mayer.
