Who is Scott Helmer?

Helmer’s bio describes a songwriter who rebuilt his life through music. In 2008, after his business and personal life collapsed, he says he lost nearly everything and came close to taking his own life. He credits his faith with keeping him here. He went back to songwriting, relaunched his music career in 2012, and has since played more than 1,000 concerts across the United States, according to his site.

His bio lists shared stages with Heart, 3 Doors Down, Eddie Money, Jeff Bridges and Eric Burdon & The Animals. It says he worked with producer Henry Hirsch on the release Wake Me When It’s Over, and that his benefit shows have helped raise more than $3 million for causes that include mental health, veterans and children’s programs. In 2016, his site says, he set a Guinness World Records title for the most live music performances in 24 hours in multiple cities, playing 12 charity concerts across California and Arizona in a single day.

What is “To Them We’re All the Same” about?

The song is a protest song in the old, plain sense. In his release notes, Helmer says it does not side with any party or ideology. Instead it looks at division, at what he calls “the false left-right paradigm,” and at power. Its core idea is that people on opposite sides of an argument often have more in common than they think. The lyrics speak from the point of view of someone who has pushed back against both sides and lost friends for it, and they touch on the human cost of war.

The acoustic version strips the song down to one voice and one guitar so the words carry it. Helmer wrote the song and plays everything on the recording, and Chris Theis mixed and mastered it. The release notes say the performance is meant to encourage listeners “to think independently, question assumptions and recognize a shared humanity beyond political labels.”

Where was the video filmed?

Helmer filmed the official music video live on location in Monument Valley, the red-rock landscape on the Navajo Nation along the Utah-Arizona line. The setup is simple: Helmer, his acoustic guitar and those desert buttes behind him. Watch it here, with lyrics:

The audio is also on Spotify and Apple Music, and as a download from his website.

Where can you see Scott Helmer live?

Helmer is a road musician in the literal sense. He tours in a 60-foot coach and trailer, and he is now booking solo-acoustic dates for 2026 and 2027: headline shows, multi-act bills and opening slots. On his site he puts his approach simply: making a genuine connection and earning an audience “one show, one town at a time.” Venues and fans can follow new dates on the tour page and on Bandsintown.
