Who is VIRID?

Olivia Cirisan and Ancel Fitzgerald Neeley started writing songs together in 2022. In their own words, their influences are eclectic and far apart, and the result is a sound that is “equal parts meticulous and unrestrained.” Their tagline is a little stranger and more fun: “People on your computer.”

The duo has been releasing music on Bandcamp for a while. Their 2025 record Slow Images, made with collaborator David Minnix, is a set of seven structured improvisations, each written in response to a photograph the group collected of a striking place they had passed through. Track titles like “Noise Grass,” “Weird Tree” and “Bathroom Window” give a good sense of the curiosity behind it. “Bloom” takes that same curiosity and points it toward songs.

What does VIRID’s new single “Bloom” sound like?

“Bloom” is long for a single, a little over six minutes, and the band uses the space. The duo’s lineup puts vibraphone and percussion at the center, their sound leans on experimental electronica as much as pop, and the band’s Instagram notes that “Bloom” also features a scored clarinet and synth trio. Olivia and Ancel mixed the track themselves, and it was mastered by Dave Roof. It is the opening single from So Many Versions of the Same Place, VIRID’s debut album.

What is the “Bloom” music video like?

The video came out on YouTube the same day as the song. “To celebrate we danced in public and made it a music video,” the band wrote on release day. Ancel directed and edited it. Behind-the-scenes clips the band posted show the two of them in matching iridescent jackets, filming on railroad tracks and in wide-open lots, which fits the playful, homemade spirit of the whole rollout.

What’s next for VIRID?

A lot, and soon. “Blush,” the second single from the album, is out Friday, October 16. The band says it features a guest bassist and a cello solo. A third single, “Serpent,” follows on November 23, and the full album, So Many Versions of the Same Place, is due December 11. You can already hear live versions of “Serpent” and “Blush” in the band’s live session for Ann Arbor’s student radio station WCBN, which is posted on their YouTube channel.
