Who is HUE?
HUE is Alireza, Arejay James and Nic Keene. The band’s press kit says HUE grew out of a long creative partnership that started with Alireza, and that drummer AreJay came in after time as a touring member of RDGLDGRN, another DC band. The kit sums up their approach in one line: “We dont just play shows, we turn moshpits into dancefloors.”
They have spent years on stage to earn that line. The press kit lists opening slots for Three 6 Mafia in Washington and Erykah Badu in New York, a tour with letlive., a set at NAMM in California, and orchestral performances under conductor André Leonard. According to the band’s team, this summer also brought a main stage slot on the DC date of Warped Tour.

What does HUE sound like?
Picture go-go’s rolling, call-and-response percussion, the sound DC built in the 1970s and never let go of, with heavy, detuned guitars on top. HUE’s press kit calls their sound “a Venn diagram of cultures and genres,” pulling from go-go, pop-punk, djent, R&B and trap. They name Animals As Leaders, Periphery, Bad Brains, Turnstile and Reaction Band as influences. Bad Brains, another DC band, is a fitting name on that list. They were mixing hardcore punk with reggae more than 40 years ago.
The groove stays in charge. Even at their heaviest, HUE’s drums swing, and that swing is what lets a mosh pit turn into a dance floor halfway through a song.
What is on the “Highly Under Estimated” EP?
The EP runs five songs. Three of them were singles first, and each had its own official music video: the hard-hitting “You Will Regret This,” “Home” with Shooters ABM, and “Diamond District.” The band’s team describes the EP as the “final form” of that run. Skyler Acord, known for his work with the band Issues, produced and recorded it, with help from Eric Taft, Kris Crummett and Alex Prieto. The result is tight and modern without losing its edge.
“Otherside” closes the record and is its most personal song. Alireza says it grew out of a stretch of his life when he lost a lot of friends and family, “some were to cancer, some were to car crashes, violence, and even unknown health conditions.” He wanted the music to feel lighter than the subject, “a light hearted song that anyone could listen to regardless of musical background.” Featured artist Rauli V wrote lyrics about the other side of chasing music: “complacency, sleepless nights, feeling exploited,” and “the tension between ambition and exhaustion.”

Where can you watch HUE’s music videos?
All three singles have official videos on the band’s YouTube channel. “Diamond District” is a good place to start:
What’s next for HUE?
Press has started to notice. The band’s press kit points to coverage in The Washington Post, and its site also shares features from Washington City Paper and Metal Injection. The kit also mentions a sold-out show at the Go-Go Museum in DC. The best way to keep up with new dates is the tour section of hue.band, where the band posts shows and merch first.
