Who is Andrew Huston?
Huston came up in Philadelphia’s music scene, playing in a string of bands before starting a solo project under his own name. His team counts five solo records since 2019, plus one with his band, The Waders. His last full-length, Cycling, credited to Andrew Huston & The Waders, came out August 23, 2024, on Buzzer Beater Records. Then came the move west, about 3,000 miles from home, which is usually the point where a songwriter loses momentum. Huston used it as material instead.

What does “California Rain” sound like?
His team describes “California Rain” as a jangly rocker in line with his earlier music, with cleaner, more streamlined production. The lyric is about a change of scenery and the surprises that come with new surroundings, which makes it a natural first look at the album. The listening notes point to Jeff Tweedy, Mac DeMarco and Elliott Smith as touchstones, and the album’s press materials suggest it for fans of Elliott Smith, Band of Horses and Alex G. If you know Huston’s earlier work, expect his familiar vocal phrasing in a sharper frame.
The song is not public until October 16. Until then, you can hear where he is coming from on Spotify and Bandcamp.
What is Andrew Huston’s album SWAY about?
SWAY is a ten-song record about isolation, and about how strange isolation feels when the weather outside is perfect. “Never Want To” is a surfy breakup song with spooky textures. “Ocean Drive (Till I See)” and “The Fishing Pier” follow Huston around the California coast as he takes stock of the move. “Minnesota Snow,” the second-to-last track, steps away to a cold place to find some clarity about the warm one. The closing title track is about weathering storms, inside and out, and staying put through them.
The full tracklist: “Eggshells,” “Like Halloween,” “Never Want To,” “Ocean Drive (Till I See),” “Ankle Brace (Where Are Your Friends?),” “California Rain,” “The Fishing Pier,” “Don’t Cry,” “Minnesota Snow” and “Sway.”
Who made SWAY with Andrew Huston?
It is essentially a two-person record. Huston wrote every song and plays drums, his first instrument, along with bass, guitar and lead vocals. Producer Stephen Cunningham recorded, engineered and mixed the album at Dream Machine Studio in Long Beach, and he plays guitar, keyboards, synthesizers and piano. Paige Scherer sings on “The Fishing Pier” and Emma Stotts on “Minnesota Snow.” Ian D.G. Bennett mastered it at Mission Control Mastering. Huston’s team calls it his tightest and most cohesive record yet.

Where can you see Andrew Huston play live?
The SWAY release show is Sunday, November 15, 2026, at Vine, the wine bar and performance space at 2142 E. 4th Street on Long Beach’s Retro Row. Cynthia Nelson Band and iji open.
