Please introduce yourself. What do you do? Why? What do you want people to know about you?
I’m a casting director turned acting and audition coach. I help actors find their unique approaches.
Every actor works differently, there’s no one size fits all process. So my job is to help actors find their individual way in.
What qualities make you different and unique from everyone else in the industry?
My background is in casting. I’ve pulled back the curtain and seen the wizard. Because of this, I know there are no “rules.” I help actors take away some of the fear that goes along with auditioning. Some of the guesswork.
Actors tend to try to want to jump into the casting’s head and give them what they think they want instead of showing them what the role could be. That’s my job. Freeing the actor up to do just that. Get out of their own way so they can make cool, unique choices.
Describe THAT moment when you realized you’re doing what you were born to do.
I remember sitting in an audition for a TV movie I was casting. The material was really straightforward, so we were having trouble finding an actor to bring it to life in the way the producers wanted. Then an actor came in and did just that.
He broke all the “rules” actors are taught. He looked out the window for most of his audition, took up tons of time, made it his own. It was captivating. We knew then and there he was our guy.
I felt so special being a part of that. I love being in the room when you know something special is happening. Something magical. Actors have the ability to bring a role to life.
It’s not just the writer’s words, it’s a combination of the writer’s words and the actor’s execution. It’s amazing.
What’s been the biggest challenge you’ve had to go through and how did you grow through it?
Changing careers, and having the courage to do so. I started out wanting to be an actor. When I realized that I didn’t have the ability to promote myself in the way an actor must, I knew I needed to find a creative career in the entertainment industry.
I found casting, but it was a hard path. Deciding to leave a dream I’d had my whole life was terrifying. I spent years becoming a casting director, then when I realized I no longer loved that, having the courage to find another path was incredibly scary.
Finding my way to coaching was one of the most challenging and rewarding things I’ve ever done in my life.
Who are the TOP 3 people you’d want to meet that could elevate your career or business? Why these specific individuals?
My dream client is Eminem. I’d love to see the way his brain works.
