Please introduce yourself. What do you do? Why? What do you want people to know about you?
Hello I’m Tia Penny and I’m a 15 year old singer songwriter acoustic guitar player from Arizona. I find myself picking up my guitar when I’m supposed to be going to bed and I’ve been writing songs since I was 6 years old.
Last year, I recorded my first two songs with producer Vanessa Silberman, and she offered me a spot with her label A Diamond Heart Production.
I am recording more of my songs in March of this year. I’m so excited to be putting out my first EP in 2023! This whole process has been a joyride!
What qualities make you different and unique from everyone else in the industry?
As a young musician, I attend an arts school where I am trained in classical guitar, and this provides me with a technical knowledge of the instrument.
I’m drawn to 60s and 70s music, and I try to bring that old school musicality into my songwriting.
Describe THAT moment when you realized you’re doing what you were born to do.
My mom would tell you it’s when I was a baby as I guess I sang in the crib when I woke up from a nap. I would tell you it’s when I realized the impact music could have when I wrote a song dedicated to my Papa who passed away recently.
As I sang it for my family, I noticed tears in their eyes. This really moved me to keep going deep with my lyrics.
What’s been the biggest challenge you’ve had to go through and how did you grow through it?
My biggest challenge so far has been writer’s block during the pandemic. Some people took that time as an opportunity to be creative, but I took a break from music. I found myself not wanting to pick up my guitar.
The first song I wrote that got me out of this writer’s block is titled “You will be found”. I recently recorded this song, and I realized that I actually wrote it for myself. I hope it inspires others to find their way back to their passions as well.
Who are the TOP 3 people you’d want to meet that could elevate your career or business? Why these specific individuals?
Billie Eilish – She started young like I am and she seems so happy
Paul McCartney – Beatles music really speaks to me and I play them the most in my sets
Stevie Nicks- I love the Rumours album and I’d like to build something like that. I heard she’s from Arizona too!
