Please introduce yourself, what you do, why you do it, and what you want people to know about you.
I’m Jennifer Tseng Werber, also known as Miso Pretty. I’m an L.A. native, professional burlesque dancer, live show producer, and animal lover!
What qualities make you different and unique from everyone else in the industry?
Something I feel that makes me different in our industry is my passion for the underrepresented. I love casting minorities and people of color in my productions. I want my audience to feel seen, to feel like they matter no what their size or color.
Describe THAT moment when you realized you wanted to do what you do now. Who did you tell first? What has it been like since that moment?
Oh boy, in college I was cast in the musical “ The Wiz .”
I recall doing choreography down our mock yellow brick road and getting teary. Seeing all those smiles in the audience just brought me to tears.
That was definitely the moment.
From there I just dipped into all areas of performance art. Twenty years later I never stopped.
What has been the biggest challenge you’ve had to face and how did you overcome it?
I think growing up as a dancer there was always pressure to be thin. It was the norm for my fellow ballet classmates to be underweight.
As I began my dance career into adulthood the pressure became worse. Dressing room banter always included how to lose inches, or how to eat without gaining, etc…
It created an unhealthy relationship with food. It’s taken years to undo that mindset. And still to this day work is in progress.
