TALE CHRONICLES STORIED CAREER AND HISTORIC JOURNEY
(New York, NY) – Roxy Music guitarist/esteemed record producer and Rock N’ Roll Hall Of Famer Phil Manzanera is set to release a brand new memoir: “Revolución To Roxy” is due out March 22nd via Wordzworth Publishing.
“Revolución to Roxy” contains over 100 color and black and white photographs and covers Manzanera’s life and times with Roxy Music and a cast of musical royalty including: Bob Dylan, David Gilmour and Rick Wright (Pink Floyd), Paul Simonon (The Clash), Chrissie Hynde (The Pretenders) and more.
The memoir delves into exciting musical adventures and mishaps, from the early days of Roxy to the group’s second and third acts and their induction into the Rock N’ Roll Hall Of Fame.
A companion music CD, of the same name, will be released on April 12th via Expression Records via BFD/The Orchard. It features ten Phil Manzanera tracks in total, including five previously unreleased songs. Please see below for the track listing. Click here to access cover art for the memoir/CD. Of his new memoir, Phil Manzanera commented, “I’ve written this memoir for my English and Colombian family, dear friends and music fans, who’ve followed my musical twists and turns for over half a century. It’s a memoir that spans my ‘50’s childhood in Cuba, Hawaii and Venezuela, when everything seemed in the brightest technicolor, to monochrome but very cool ‘60’s London and the start of a music career that continues to enrich my life.
Roxy Music is an important part of the story but I hope the reader will find my family history every bit as fascinating as my music adventures: I’m proud to be related to the most famous 17th century Sephardic Jewish pirate of the Caribbean, a British spy and an Italian opera musician.”
“Revolución To Roxy” details Manzanera’s travels through the dangerous streets of revolutionary Havana, being sampled by Jay-Z amongst many other gripping tales and goes right up to Manzanera’s recent acclaimed albums: one with Roxy’s Andy Mackay (AM PM) and two with Tim Finn (CAUGHT BY THE HEART and THE GHOST OF SANTIAGO), whom Manzanera has known since 1976, when he produced Finn’s groundbreaking New Zealand band Splitz Endz’ second album, SECOND THOUGHTS.
Manzanera’s startling family history is documented, dating back to the expulsion of the Sephardic Jews from Spain in 1492, via the 1959 revolution in Cuba. The memoir chronicles his return there in later years to play a concert at the Karl Marx Theatre with Jack Bruce (Cream), as well as the discovery of a Neapolitan Opera musician grandfather.

Phil Manzanera’s most recent offering is a new collaboration with Roxy bandmate Andy Mackay, AM PM, released late last year via BFD/The Orchard. The original instrumental set has been receiving rave reviews from the media with The Spill Magazine declaring it “a stunningly beautiful, thought provoking, creative, interesting album.” Premier Guitar dubbed it “intriguing…full of unexpected twists and turns,” while Vintage Guitar referred to the album as having “a fresh, modern sound”.
Phil Manzanera is one of the UK’s best-known musicians and record producers, having shot to prominence in the early ‘70’s as the lead guitarist with Roxy Music. He is acknowledged as one of the world’s leading guitarists and is in much demand both as a performer and record producer.
Now in his fifth decade as a professional musician, in addition to his work with Roxy Music, he has worked with many music luminaries, including Steve Winwood, David Gilmour, John Cale, Godley and Creme, Nico (Velvet Underground) and John Wetton (King Crimson, Asia). He has co-written material with many artists, including Brian Eno, Tim Finn, Robert Wyatt and David Gilmour. Manzanera co-wrote Pink Floyd’s single “One Slip,” from their 1988 MOMENTARY LAPSE OF REASON album.
Manzanera has also produced seminal albums for Spanish-speaking artists Draco Rosa, Enrique Bunbury, Héoes del Silencio Aterciopelados, Paralamas and Fito Paez.
Roxy Music (Phil Manzanera and Andy Mackay along with Bryan Ferry, Brian Eno and Paul Thompson) formed in 1971, establishing themselves as elegant, art school rockers. Their meteoric rise continued for 12 years until the band decided to take a break.
During Roxy Music’s extended hiatus (18 years!), Phil Manzanera and Andy Mackay joined together to release numerous albums under the moniker The Explorers. Roxy Music returned to the fray in 2001 with an international, sold-out tour and continued to play to worldwide audiences until 2010.
In March, 2019, Roxy Music was inducted into the Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame and played live at the ceremony. The Autumn of 2022 saw the 50th anniversary of Roxy Music; that same year the band played selected dates worldwide, culminating with a sold-out show at London’s O2 Arena.
