The 2nd annual BeachLife Ranch festival took place over the past weekend (September 22-24) in Redondo Beach, CA. The sunny skies and cool ocean breeze set the scene for amazing performances from Jack Johnson, Brad Paisley, The Doobie Brothers, Cody Jinks, Wynonna Judd, The Avett Brothers, Midland, Shooter Jennings’ Revival performing The Highwaymen, Blackberry Smoke, Shakey Graves, Chris Isaak, a world record-breaking performance from Devon Allman and Donovan Frankenreiter, among many other top Country, Americana and Roots talent. Over 26,000 attendees took part in the festivities over the weekend, a 25% increase from the inaugural festival last year.
With their Friday afternoon performance on the HighLands stage, Devon Allman and Donavon Frankenreiter officially broke the World Record for fastest time to play a concert in each of the 50 states by successfully performing 50 shows in every state in 49 days. Following their electric performance, the band was presented with plaques and custom Gibson guitars to commemorate the accomplishment. Later in the day, Friday night headliner Jack Johnson serenaded the packed crowd with a mix of hits including “Upside Down,” “Bubble Toes” and “Banana Pancakes,” as well as a sprinkling of eclectic covers and bringing up special guests to play alongside him including Donovan Frankenreiter, Bahamas and The Avett Brothers who joined Jack for a beautiful and moving sing-a-long performance of “Better Together” to close out the first night of BeachLife Ranch. Check out a recap of the day here.
Following the highs from the first day, Saturday’s lineup was highly anticipated. Fans who arrived early were treated to the sounds of Joe Purdy, The Brothers Comatose, Larkin Poe and Keb’ Mo’ among others. By afternoon the Blackberry Smoke hit the HighLands stage ahead of Shooter Jennings’ Revival making their BeachLife Ranch return on the LowLands stage alongside the waters’ edge. Performing the iconic music of The Highwaymen, which included Shooter’s father Waylon Jennings, the band invited a bunch of friends to join them. Sara Watkins, Cody Jinks, Charlie Starr (Blackberry Smoke), Amanda Shires, Joe Purdy, Robert Randolph, among others came up for the memorable jam session. Wynonna Judd once again proved herself to be a powerhouse dynamo with her high-energy set Saturday evening ahead of the legendary Doobie Brothers who are celebrating their 50th Anniversary Tour this year and delivered with their catalogue of rock hits including “Takin’ It To The Streets” and “Listen To The Music.” Outlaw Country star Cody Jinks punctuated an exciting and memorable day of music with his set to close out the night. The final day of the festival got underway with music from Miles Miller, Amanda Shires, Dustbowl Revival, Yola and more. The Marshall Tucker Band got the mid-afternoon party going with their performance ahead of Parmalee and Chris Isaak who performed in a one-of-a-kind jeweled blue suit. As the sun was setting over the water, Midland was the final act to perform on the LowLands stage. As their set came to an end, the sea of music fans filled into the main stage side with excitement and anticipation for the final performance of the weekend from one of Country music’s biggest stars, Brad Paisley who delivered an entertaining set filled with surprises.
Among his blistering guitar play, Paisley joyfully interacted with the crowd and took full advantage of the catwalk which extended the stage into the audience. “This is the coolest festival I’ve ever seen,” he said at one point during the show. At other times, he took a fan’s phone for selfies, he gifted a young girl a guitar he’d just performed with, a couple was engaged onstage then serenaded with “She’s Everything,” members of the military were honored, a giant puppet head with Paisley’s likeness greeted the crowd and, as he walked off stage, he threw the hat off his head to a young fan in the audience. It was a fitting way to end a weekend filled with unique, special, and memorable moments. An overview of day 3 can be seen here.
In addition to live music onstage, the festival showcased wide-ranging food and drink offerings including tasty bites from renowned chefs such as Max and Lijo of Camphor and Ben Ford, as well as acclaimed local eateries, breweries, and craft spirits. Throughout the grounds, attendees were able to take in art installations from the festival’s official “Creative Consciousness Partner” Indivisible Arts and Punk Rock & Paintbrushes, participate in line dancing in the Tito’s Barn from Adia Dance, Boot Scootin, and the Kickstart Country Crew. Jack Daniel’s hosted a Karaoke all weekend long, the DAOU-a-GoGo Truck offered wine varietals from Paso Robles, with gourmet cheese and charcuterie and King’s Hawaiian, the iconic bread company, treated guests to complimentary specialty sliders, made just for BeachLife at the King’s Hawaiian Patio. VIP and Outlaw guests were treated to an elevated experience with Don Julio Rosado Tequila serving up premium cocktails, elevated viewing decks, private cabanas and luxury decor at the HighLands Stage. Relaxation and comfort were noticeably a priority of the BeachLife experience with several lounge areas with cushioned seats and tables available to all fans, cornhole and ping-pong games, clean and well-maintained grounds, free water bottle fill stations, in-and-out privileges for GA+ and VIP guests, lockers available for rent and easy and convenient access to all four stages.
Central to every BeachLife is the festival’s commitment to working with local and national nonprofits. BeachLife Ranch partnered with a number of amazing organizations this year that have made a real impact in support of important causes, with an emphasis on those benefiting the well-being of veterans and the local community including: Redondo Beach Police Foundation, Fisher House Foundation, Kings Care Foundation and the Jimmy Miller Memorial Foundation. A silent auction was held onsite featuring one-of-a-kind items and experiences such as signed merch (posters, guitars, drumheads, clothing, etc), exclusive artwork and paintings, jewelry, trips and more with all proceeds going towards charity.
“Our team has strived to build a festival where music lovers come to celebrate culture and friends, and artists feel the energy, creating a truly unique sense of community on the beautiful Pacific Ocean coast,” says BeachLife founder Allen Sanford. “This time, I didn’t need to come up with a quote because our friend Brad Paisley phrased it perfectly — that [BeachLife] was the coolest festival he’d ever seen. Thank you to our artists, our community, and all of our staff who made this possible.”
