Please introduce yourself, what you do, why you do it, and what you want people to know about you.
Hello my name is Andrew Meikle and I live in Canada. My passion has always been anything to do with he film industry. When I was younger I started out acting and modelling, and as I got older I did more stuff behind the scenes. I started my own Independent Film Company in 2010 and since then I have written, directed, and produced three feature films, a short film, and I am currently working on a webseries.
The webseries I am working is extremely important to me. It focuses on issues within the black, gay, and black gay community. I never saw ANYONE on tv like me growing up. I am going to use my series to change that for other gay BIPOC kids out there.
What qualities makes you different and unique from everyone else in the industry?
I think we are all different and unique in our own way. Like I said before, growing up I NEVER saw a black gay man on tv. It was hard watching shows and not being able to really relate the characters that I was seeing.
Right now I am focused on making black gay men more visible on our screens. I am going to do that by telling my story and the stuff I’ve had to face
Describe THAT moment when you realized you wanted to do what you do now. Who did you tell first? What has it been like since that moment?
The first moment I realized I wanted to make films was when I watched SCREAM One. The opening scene was so amazing, everything about it was perfect. That’s when I said “I want to make the audience feel what I am feeling”.
As a script writer, you control what that audience is feeling. You’re in control if they’re scared, if they laugh, and if they cry.
What has been the biggest challenge you’ve had to face and how did you overcome it?
The biggest challenge of being an Independent filmmaker is the finances. I haven’t overcome it yet because I’m still working on it HAHA. Applying for grants, hosting fundraisers, and doing it all out of pocket is tough. Especially with the pandemic.
So I had to start a gofundme page to help me get to my goal for the webseries and we are still a long way to go before we hit that goal.
